Friends of Semiahmoo Bay Society - People and Parks
Friends of Semiahmoo Bay Society sponsored a nature experience for children from the Bridgeview Community Association in Whalley. Thanks to the generous support of Nature Canada and Parks Canada, 38 children and their daycamp leaders were able to explore and discover the George C. Reifel Bird Sanctuary situated in the Alaksen Wildlife Management area. The wetlands of the Alaksen National Wildlife Area are an internationally important migration stopover and wintering area for large numbers of migrating birds.
Using field guides and binoculars the participants walked the scenic trails of the sanctuary. The goal of the program is to connect urban youth with nature by offering quality educational experiences that build community knowledge, awareness, appreciation, responsibility and respect for the environment in our parks and natural areas.
As Caroline, age 9 stated, “The eagle was very beautiful and I really liked using the binoculars. I loved watching the ducks walk by.” th
